GENERAL INFORMATION ON AUSTRIA - for guidance only!

Crime
You should take normal, common sense precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime. Do not leave valuables unattended. Be aware that pickpockets and muggers operate in and around the city centre of Vienna, including restaurants, cafes, hotel lobbies and on public transport. You should be especially vigilant around major railway stations and city centre parks after dark.
Road Safety
When driving in Austria, you should always carry a full British licence, ownership documents and insurance details.
Visitors using Austrian motorways and "S" roads must display a Motorway Vignette on their vehicle as they enter Austria. Failure to have one will mean a heavy, on the spot fine. Motorway Vignettes are obtainable at all major border crossings into Austria and at larger petrol stations.
All vehicles above 3.5 tonnes maximum permitted laden weight and using the Austrian network of motorways and expressways are required to attach a small device - called the "GO-Box" - to their windscreen. Note that this includes larger private vehicles such as motor caravans that are above the weight limit. Drivers of vehicles close to the limit are advised to carry with them documentation confirming the maximum permitted laden weight. If your registration documents do not clearly state this, you will need to produce alternative certification e.g. from a weighbridge.
The GO-Box uses the high frequency range to communicate with the around 400 fixed-installation toll points covering the whole of Austria, making it possible to effect an automatic toll deduction without slowing down or stopping the flow of traffic. The on-board devices can be obtained for a one-off handling fee of Euro 5.00 at approximately 220 sales centres in Austria and in neighbouring countries, or via the Internet. For further information visit the website at: http://www.go-maut.at.
There is a ban on all lorries over 7.5 tons laden weight (without trailer) or over 3.5 tons (with trailer) which applies throughout the year on all motorways on Saturdays between 15:00 hours and 24:00 hours and all day on Sundays and Public Holidays. Lorries over 7.5 tons laden weight are also prohibited from using motorways throughout the year between 22:00 hours and 05:00 hours. From mid-June to mid-September further restrictions apply. There is a ban on lorries over 7.5 tons laden weight overtaking on several motorways. Drivers should look out for special prohibiting signs.
The Transport Ministry and ASFINAG (the semi-privatised motorway operator) are continuing to carry out stringent checks on HGVs. It is therefore vital that such vehicles are roadworthy, and are correctly documented. Vehicles found to have defects have been impounded until the completion of necessary repairs.
Visitors arriving in Austria by road should note that under present EU regulations, EU nationals are not allowed to drive non-EU rental cars into EU territory.
LOCAL LAWS AND CUSTOMS
Drug laws are similar to those in the UK. Possession or trafficking of drugs will be met with strict penalties and usually a lengthy prison sentence.
Visitors are strongly advised to carry ID documents at all times; this could be in the form of a photocopy of the data page of your passport, if you prefer to leave the passport in a safe place, eg at your hotel.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
British nationals need a valid passport to enter Austria.
British nationals do not require a visa.
Single parents or other adults travelling alone with children should be aware that some countries require documentary evidence of parental responsibility before allowing lone parents to enter the country or, in some cases, before permitting the children to leave the country. For further information on exactly what will be required at immigration please contact the Austrian Embassy: Austrian representation to the UK.
HEALTH
You should take with you an E111 form, which should be completed before you leave the United Kingdom. This is available free of charge from most United Kingdom post offices. It will cover part of the cost of state provided emergency health care in Austria.
However, an E111 does not cover all medical fees, or medical repatriation, or on-going medical treatment of a non-urgent nature. We therefore recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance.
Tickborne encephalitis (TBE) is endemic in wooded areas from spring to autumn. You should seek advice regarding inoculations before travelling.
See the UK Department of Health leaflet “Health Advice For Travellers” Tel: 0800 555 7777), check "advice to travellers" on the Department of Health website or contact your GP. www.dh.gov.uk
GENERAL
Skiing
If you are planning a skiing holiday it is advisable to contact the Austrian Tourist Agency in London (Tel: 020 7629 0461) for advice on weather and safety conditions before travelling. Visitors should be aware that off-piste skiing is highly dangerous. All safety instructions should be followed meticulously given the danger of avalanches in some areas. Avalanche information can be obtained by telephoning (Tel: +43 512 581839) or by visiting the following website: http://www.lawine.at website: http://www.avalanches.org. At present, (Spring) extra caution should be taken, as this is avalanche season.
