GENERAL INFORMATION ON UKRAINE - for guidance only!

Crime
You should be alert to the possibility of street crime and petty theft and aware that foreigners offer lucrative targets. You should keep valuables and cash out of sight, especially in crowded areas and tourist spots, where pickpockets and bag snatchers operate.
A common scam is to drop a wallet or bundle of money in front of a tourist. The crook then "finds" the money and asks if it is the tourist's or offers to share the money with them. If you are approached in this way, you should walk away without engaging in conversation.
You should also beware of accepting drinks in bars from casual acquaintances, which could be spiked.
Political Situation
The political situation is calm.
Road Safety
British driving licence holders must possess a valid International Driving Licence to drive legally in Ukraine. There is a zero tolerance policy on drink driving.
Rail Safety
You should take particular care on public transport. If you take the overnight train you should, if possible, travel accompanied and you should secure your compartment from the inside.
LOCAL LAWS AND CUSTOMS
Don’t get involved with drugs. Penalties are severe.
Homosexuality is legal and generally tolerated.
Don’t take photographs in the vicinity of government or military establishments.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The Government of Ukraine has announced that European Union (including British) and Swiss citizens arriving in Ukraine between 1 May and 1 September 2005 will not require visas for visits of up to 90 days.
But outside these dates British nationals visiting Ukraine normally require visas. Information about applying for a visa and an application form are available on the Ukrainian Embassy website at: www.ukremb.org.uk/eng/cvs/
If you intend to arrive in Ukraine at the international airport in Kiev you must obtain a visa before travel.
Tourists staying in Ukraine for 14 days or less and arriving at Odessa (seaport or airport) or Simferopol may obtain a visa on arrival for a fee in certain circumstances. Before you travel you should confirm with the Ukrainian Embassy that your planned trip meets the criteria to allow you to travel without a visa.
If you plan to stay more than six months, you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs following your arrival in Ukraine. Your passport must be valid for one month beyond your intended date of departure from Ukraine.
Single parents or other adults travelling alone with children should be aware that some countries require documentary evidence of parental responsibility before allowing lone parents to enter the country or, in some cases, before permitting the children to leave the country. For further information on exactly what will be required at immigration please contact: www.ukremb.org.uk/eng/cvs/
HEALTH
Visitors to Ukraine should seek medical advice before travelling. You should consider immunisation against diphtheria, hepatitis, tick-borne encephalitis and rabies. There is a high level of sexually transmitted diseases in Ukraine and HIV is widespread. The risk of radioactive contamination from the 1986 accident at Chernobyl is insignificant, other than within the exclusion zone immediately around the Chernobyl site. No special precautions are necessary.
Don’t drink tap water without boiling it. Bottled water is readily available.
There is a bilateral agreement on Emergency Medical Treatment between Ukraine and the UK. You do not therefore need to pay an insurance levy when you arrive. If any attempt is made to charge you, you should inform the British Embassy in Kyiv. However, the agreement covers only emergency medical treatment. You should therefore also take out comprehensive medical / travel insurance before travelling, to cover all other forms of medical treatment.
For further information on health, check the Department of Health’s website at: www.dh.gov.uk
GENERAL
Carry your passport at all times. Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport. Keep a photocopy of your passport separately.
Don’t allow your visa to expire during your visit. You will not be allowed to exit the country without a valid visa.
There are strict customs regulations governing the export from Ukraine of antiques and items of historical interest. If in doubt seek prior permission from customs authorities.
If you are staying three months or more, you are advised to register with the British Embassy in Kiev.
US dollars may be readily exchanged in major cities. Sterling and Euros may also be exchanged at a more limited number of sites. Use only official exchange booths. ATMs are also available and credit cards are widely used, but not universally accepted, in cities.
Hotel accommodation in Kiev will be in short supply during May 2005, because of the Eurovision Song Contest and other events. Anyone intending to visit Kiev in May is advised to book accommodation before travelling.
